Sports Premium at St Peter's Infants

The Government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15 to provide new, substantial school sport funding.  This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school Headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.  For the year 2013/2014 we received £7860.

The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Purpose of Funding

Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving the provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses of the funding include:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • New or additional Change4life sports clubs
  • Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the School Games
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
  • Providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs

How will we be spending the sports funding and who will benefit?

We feel that the money should be used so that:  we have access to the local sports partnership; all children benefit regardless of sporting ability; that staff have access to training opportunities and continued professional development; resources to enable children to develop skills well; improving children’s engagement in PE by providing a range of sporting opportunities.

The table below shows how we intend to spend the sports funding in 2013/14

Access to the Local Sports Partnership

The school is part of the Greenacre Sports Partnership.  This enables us to have the support of their staff, gives us access to training for teachers, provides us with resources to use for planning and assessment, provides specialist PE teachers to work alongside our teachers when teaching PE, provide an after school club during the year and gives us access to competition for our pupils to take part in.  Each term the partnership will work with a different class doing an activity called balancability.  They also provide additional support and training for teachers at our request.  Not only will the children benefit from being taught by a member of the Greenacre team, but our own staff will be developing through shared good practise and assisting in the PE lessons.

Providing places for pupils for after school club

Our school offers a range of after schools clubs accessed by all children.  These clubs will continue to run as before, with a small fee charged to cover the cost of the adults who run them.  We will also be hosting Kung Fu Kids to give pupils access to a different sporting opportunity which we cannot provide in the school day.

Providing top quality resources to enable all pupils to develop their skills

We shall be replacing and supplementing our PE resources to support PE in school.  We shall also be using some of the money to improve the Early Years area to support our Reception Children’s Physical Development.

Improving children’s engagement

We shall be buying in the services of specialist PE teachers to provide our children with different sporting opportunities e.g. Street dance

The Sports Funding has to have an impact on the pupils in our school.  We shall measure the impact by:

  • Greater confidence in the planning and delivery of PE by teachers.  Observations of children and staff during PE lessons, teachers to use professional development activities to improve their PE teaching.
  • Equipment will be used more effectively as seen in observations
  • Increased after school clubs and participation in PE and sport
  • Improved enjoyment of PE by children and staff
